Green Worms: Recognized by The UNESCO

UNESCO Green Citizens

Green Worms has been recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for exemplary efforts in tackling plastic waste and empowering women through job creation. This prestigious recognition highlights Green Worms’ dedication to sustainable development and impactful work in the waste management sector.

UNESCO’s Green Citizens initiative serves as a bridge connecting UNESCO’s scientific expertise with local citizen solutions and the proactive engagement of young people in combating climate change. Launched in 2021, the Green Citizens initiative aims to support and highlight local projects that promote living in harmony with nature. UNESCO has identified over 150 impactful local initiatives in 65 countries, showcasing the global reach and significance of this initiative. Green Worms’ inclusion in this esteemed list underscores their innovative approach and commitment to environmental sustainability.

Founded in 2014, Green Worms is a social enterprise with a mission to tackle plastic waste pollution and create job opportunities, particularly for women. Over the years, Green Worms has made significant strides in waste management and social empowerment. To date, the company has created over 3,274 direct and indirect job opportunities, and has scientifically managed more than 77,000 tonnes of plastic waste.

Green Worms’ efforts have not only contributed to environmental conservation but also provided dignified employment to many women, fostering community development and social inclusion.

Green Worms’ role extends beyond waste management, actively engaging with local communities to raise awareness about sustainable waste practices and the importance of recycling. Through educational programs and community initiatives, Green Worms fosters a culture of environmental responsibility and collective action.

While proud of this recognition from UNESCO, Green Worms acknowledges that there is still a long journey ahead, as our  co-founder Jabir Karat says,

“We are happy to be recognized by UNESCO. This global recognition inspires us to create a greater impact and share our learnings from the ground. The transition to circularity is happening now, and Green Worms is co-creating value chains in collaboration with brands and manufacturers.”

Green Worms is evolving from a waste management enterprise into a circular transition company, aiming to engage brands and manufacturers in shifting from a linear to a circular economy. This transition involves redefining industry benchmarks by promoting jobs that are safe, dignified, and fairly compensated. Green Worms is committed to co-creating value chains that are traceable, impactful, and circular, ensuring a sustainable and equitable future for all.

In conclusion, Green Worms’ recognition by UNESCO is a testament to the impactful work and dedication to sustainability. As we continue to innovate and expand the mission, Green Worms remains a beacon of hope and progress in the journey towards a circular economy and environmental stewardship.
